Gung Hay Fat Choy! Happy Chinese New Year!
Here’s What’s Happening This week: The Buzz from Room 4 – Newsletter and Homework
I hope everyone enjoyed their 3 day weekend! Now we have a 3 day week to follow up! Here’s what’s going on this week:
We are happy to welcome Miss Britney Bennett to our classroom. She is a student at Kent State University and will be our student teacher. She will be with us until the beginning of April. She will be observing and assisting, working with individual and small groups of students and gradually taking over all teaching duties. Watch for a letter coming home soon telling all about her.
It’s penguin time in our classrooom! We will be learning all about penguins this week as we do various penguin activities! Read What’s The Buzz for January 9-13 to find out this week’s news and homework.
Here are this week’s Spelling words.
Here are the homework pages for the week:
Monday: Spelling homework page Unit 4 Review
I sent out an email because I was concerned that some students may not pass along the message regarding the change to tonight’s math homework.
We have been spoiled by the weather up to this point and haven’t had to deal with snowpants, boots, hats, gloves, etc. and I’ve forgotten how long it takes 29 children to get completely dressed to go home (and apparently 10 minutes isn’t enough time – YIKES!) Some children were still struggling with their boots and snowpants when I was telling them about the change to tonight’s math homework so I have a feeling they were only half-listening (and that’s probably being generous!)
Instead of the “Partial Sums Addition Homework” which was listed on the homework sheet for Wednsday, the students took hoome the Unit 4 Review packet. There are several pages to this but it’s actually only 16 problems. I want students to have plenty of time to work on this so they can work on it tonight and tomorrow night. It is not due until Friday. If students want to turn it in on Thursday, that’s fine. They won’t have to do it again on Thursday night for homework.
Two homework papers were found on the floor and we don’t know who lost them, so if your child doesn’t have a homework paper, click on the links below to print them.
Wednesday and Thursday Homework- Math Review
Wed. Homework – spelling pp. 85-86
Thursday Homework – pp. 89-90
And a last note…. Nobody took home a January Behavior Calendar today because they were rushing around getting dressed and I told them I didn’t want them to get stressed out about packing up their calendar since I hadn’t passed them out yet. I told the children to tell you that I would give them a sticker even though you hadn’t signed it as long as they had their homework.
We’ll be sure to stop our math lesson at 3:20 in order to get packed up and leave extra time for getting dressed in all our winter gear from now on!
Click on the picture above to check out this site by Everyday Math. It has animated resources that will demonstrate the some of the different methods that students can use to solve computation problems. Students will be asked to try and practice methods shown in class, but they can use whatever is efficient and accurate for them.
Click on the picture above for another site from the creators of Everyday Math. This site has four great aspects. You can access the glossaries, answers to frequently asked questions and all the family letters that are sent home with each unit. (Please keep in mind we use the third edition.) It also has materials that will help you help your child with Homelink and Study Link problems.
Happy 2012 Everyone and Welcome Back! I hope everyone had a wonderful, relaxing vacation! I have enjoyed hearing about the holiday celebrations from all the children! Such excitement!

Note regarding Tuesday’s Mystery Bag assignment: Some students did not receive the white lunch bag to put their mystery item in to bring to school on Wednesday. You can use any type of bag instead – brown lunch bag or grocery bag or whatever. Sorry!
What a busy week that awaits us! We will have an assembly on Wednesday afternoon. It is titled: The Environmental Wonderment Show. Here’s a link for more information about it: http://illusionmaker.net.
Friday, November 11th is Veterans’ Day. We will learn all about why this day is a special day for us and why we celebrate this day. We will write letters to send to Veterans to thank them for their service to our country.
Everyone should have received a conference reminder slip as well as a Pre-conference Questionnaire. In order to help me to better able plan for our short conference time together, I ask that you jot me a note on this questionnaire regarding your feelings about your child’s second grade school year so far.
On our conference dates, please knock on the door at your scheduled time to let me know you have arrived. Then have a seat and I will be with you shortly. This will help me to keep on schedule.
