Week Two

Algebra and Pre algebra - We finished our staff age estimation activity in which we used technology to create scatter plots, graph an equation and interpret data and graphs to determine which student was the “Bestimator”, best estimator, in their class.  While doing so we reviewed basic math vocabulary, absolute values and decision making.  We learned how to use the TI-84 calculator to enter data sets, work with lists of data, create scatter plots and use various functions as ”sum” and “abs”.

In prealgebra we will turn to squares and square roots and then evaluating expressions using the correct order of operations.

In algebra we have begun a unit on functions and will be covering material in sections of three different chapters of the book.  During the unit we will study, with and without technology, proper use of vocabulary and various representations and uses of functions.

Geometry began studying basic geometric representations and vocabulary to set the groundwork for correct geometric communication.  We began with undefined terms and postulates.  We will study lines and angles followed by logical reasoning.  We used Cabri Jr. on the TI-84 to draw and measure geometric figures.

First Week

Thanks to all the Red Team students (and the non-Red Team students in my class) for a great start to the school year.  It has been a pleasure meeting everyone and beginning to learn about each student.

We created Venn Diagrams displaying our similarities and differences as a way to get to know more about each other.

Students in Geometry are analyzing an article about carbon footprints that appeared in Technology Review magazine and published through MIT.  We are discussing the need to question information that is presented and determine it’s accuracy.  A lot has been discussed about area and diameter.  They are to discuss this with someone for homework and write about that persons reactions.

Students in algebra and pre algebra have been estimating the ages of staff members and using TI-84 calculators to create and analyze scatter plots using the data.  It sure was interesting to find that I appear to be 59 years old by at least one of the students.

On Line Textbook Passwords

Today students received their online textbook user names and passwords.  They also received a handout about the online textbook resource and they are to have their parents read, fill out and return the handout by Friday August 29.  Moms and Dads, please take time to explore this great resouce along with your child.  Many parents have talked to us about how helpful it has been to them when helping their child.

Welcome Back!!

Welcome back to school and to the eighth grade red team.  I am Mr. Bradac, the Grade 8 Red Team math teacher.  I teach students prealgebra, enriched algebra and honors geometry.  I truly enjoy teaching math and look forward to teaching and learning with you this school year.

Please check out the various links to the left and be sure to select the tab at the top that corresponds to the course you take. There you will find class information for both students and parents.

SumThing Bradacal is a growing site with links to math websites.  Check it out and let me know if you have any favorite sites that I may want to add.
