Procedures and Homework Assignments for 10/15/08

Testing Day/Career Fair for HS students today.  No Chinese lessons.

Procedure for MS 3P/5P (10/15/08)

1.  Collect signature slips.

2.  Check index cards as homework from yesterday.

3.  Review old terms/teach 5 more new terms.  Pair practice.

4.  Class activities: chopsticks w/Cheerios; group competition.

5.  Pass out reading packet (Geography about China–3P only).

H/W: 1) Review all learned terms.  2) Browse through the reading packet (3P only).

Procedures and Homework Assignments for 10/14/08

Procedure for HS 1P (10/14/08)

 

Objectives: Students will be able to tell dates, ask/answer questions about dates, and get permissions. 

Procedure:

1.      1) Meet at cafeteria on Thursday; dress very casually (paint & ink!!).  2) Quiz part II next Tuesday (10/21—writing and comprehension; same format from workbook F, G, & H and textbook p.1-8).  3) Ms. Chang won’t be available after school this afternoon due to a staff meeting at 2:30.

2.      Quiz Part I. 

3.      Listen to CD (texbook p1-8).   

 

H/W: 1) Workbook sections F, G, & H.  Check/go over on 10/20.  2) Make sure you can write all sentences in pages 1-4.

 

Procedure for HS 2P/9P (10/14/08)

 

Objectives: Students will be able to say/write math operators (+, −, ×, ÷, =) in Chinese characters. 

Procedure:

1.  1) Meet at cafeteria on Thursday.  Dress very casually (paint & ink!!).  2) Quiz part II next Tuesday (10/21-math expressions).  3) Ms. Chang won’t be available after school this afternoon due to a staff meeting at 2:30.

2.   Quiz Part I.

3.  Pair activity: flash cards.  Make sure you can say and write in Chinese. 

4.  Read textbook p.20.   

 

H/W: 1) Review/memorize Chinese characters for all math operators.  2) Workbook Sections K.  

Check/go over next Monday (10/20).  

 

 

Procedure for MS 3P/5P (10/14)

 

Objectives: 1) Students learn the basic greetings.  2) Students will know Ms. Chang’s Grading Policy and classroom philosophy. 

Procedures:

1.      Greet students at the door. 

2.   Collect signature slips, if any. 

3.   Pass out and go over Grading Policy/Index Cards handout/Poem “Don’t Laugh at Me”. 

4.   Teach/Review five terms from yesterday—TPR (你好, 我是…, 你是…, 張老師, 再見).  Draw students randomly for informal assessment. Zhāng lǎo shī張老師 (Ms. Chang); Zài Jiàn再見 Good-bye)).  Explain tone marks and simple rules. 

2.      Class activity: 1) Throw a ball to practice我是…, 你是….  2) Build community activity.  Students take turns saying我是…, 你是… and one sentence to introduce themselves in English.

5.      Chopsticks practice (Cheerios cereal–3P only). 

 

H/W: 1) Return classroom rule signature slip by tomorrow.  2) Make index cards tonight.

Procedure for HS 1P (10/13/08)

 

Objectives: Students will be able to read, tell and comprehend date accurately and fluently. 

Procedure:

1.      1) Quiz part I tomorrow (workbook sections A, B, C, & D—know year , month , day , weekday 星期 and the order of telling dateyear, month, day, weekday, Chinese characters from to ).  2) Quiz part II next Tuesday (10/21).

2.      Know the difference between American and Chinese format of telling date (textbook p.8).

3.      Listen to CD Sections A/I.  Work on and go over workbook sections A to D & I (20 minutes).

4.      Return all papers.

     

H/W: 1) Review for quiz tomorrow.  2) Read textbook pages 1-4 thoroughly.   

Procedure for HS 2P/9P (10/13/08)

 

Objectives: 1) Students will be able to master Chinese characters from to .  2)  Students will be able to discriminate consonants (zh ch  sh  r  z  c  s).

Procedure:

1.  Quiz part I tomorrow (A: 4 sentences–Wǒ Shì…, Wǒ Jiā Yǒu  # Gè Rén, Wǒ Jǒu Bàba, Māma, Liǎng Gè Gēge Hàn Yī Gè  Mèimei, Wǒ Shí Sì Suì; B: 10 consonants; C: translating between numbers and Chinese characters).

2.  Open your textbook p. 16-21.  Listening to CD (10-12 minutes).  Read p.22 on your own.

3.  Work on /Go over workbook Sections B, C, E, & I (20 minutes).

4.  Return all papers.

 

H/W: Review for quiz tomorrow (consonants and Chinese characters to ).

 

 

Procedure for MS 3P/5P (10/13)

 

Objectives: 1) Teacher knows the student; students know their teacher/classmates.  2) Set the tone for the next 6-week Exploratory Chinese.  3) Teach basic greetings.

Procedures: 

  1. Greet students at the doorway and say “Nǐ Hǎo你好 (How are you?/How do you do?).  Pass out a class list slip to each one.  Students sit on their assigned seat.  Take attendance.  
  2. Students work on their Student Inventory sheet (exit slip).  Collect Student Inventory sheet.
  3. Pass out/Go over Ms. Chang’s Classroom Rules and supplies.
  4. Introduce myself.  Answer any questions for Ms. Chang.
  5. Teach basic grammar rules (symbols for tone marks, rules of placing tone marks, different tone pronunciation, etc) and 1-3 terms (Nǐ Hǎo你好, Wǒ shì … 我是… (I’m); Nǐ shì… 你是… (you’re) 

H/W: Sign and return the classroom slip by Wednesday (10/15).

Procedure for HS 1P (10/10/08)

 

1.      Skit.

2.      Finish viewing the video “China”.

3.      Reading package (geography about China).

4.      H./W: Read textbook pages 5-8 thoroughly. 

 

Procedure for HS 2P/9P (10/10/08)

 

1.      1) Turn in your homework.  2) Take one copy of handout (geography about China).

2.      Bell work.

3.      Group activity (discussion).  Each one gets assigned a city to label and to present one fun/significant fact about that city.  Collect your worksheet.

4.      Compare/Contrast between USA and China.

 

Procedure for MS 3P/5P (10/10/08)

1.  Survey.  Collect.

2.  Collect art projects.  Present it with explanation, if you would like to.

3.  Play review games (Charades/Follow the leader).

4.  Treat.  Thank you for being such a good group. 

5.  Final review (all the terms we learned during the last 6 weeks).

Procedure for HS 10 (10/9/08)

 

Objectives: 1) Students will be able to incorporate all old and new vocabulary/terms/sentences in the skit and communicate with each other fluently and accurately in Chinese.  2) Students will be able to tell apply new vocabulary/terms/sentences in telling dates/getting permission. 

Procedure:

  1. 1) Turn in your homework.  2) Take one square paper.
  2. Skit.  Turn in your hard copy, rubric, and skit card to Ms. Chang.
  3. Model stroke order for new characters.  Practice on dry erase board.
  4. Continue sentence patterns/terms in the supplementary handout. 

 

H/W: 1) Write new vocabulary, one row each.  2) Read your textbook pages 5-8 thoroughly to familiarize yourself with all sentence patterns.  3) Bring in your textbook for culture class tomorrow—geography about China.

 

Procedure for HS 20/90 (10/9/08)

 

Objectives: Students will be able to say, write, read and comprehend numbers and math operators (-, ×, ÷) in math expressions in Chinese.  2) Students will be sight read sentences and discriminate final set of consonants.    

Procedure:

  1. 1) Take one square paper and one set of handout (to introduce zh ch sh z r c s).  2) Bring in your textbook for tomorrow’s culture class—geography of China.  3) No 8th period activity today.  Ms. Chang is in other classroom. 
  2. Dictation on dry erase board (consonants).
  3. Finish up consonants (90 only).  Check pronunciation and pair practice.
  4. Sight read sentences (Finish up Review Sheet #1—20  only). 
  5. Teach/Model stroke order for remaining characters (, , , ).  Practice on dry erase board.

 

H/W: 1) Read textbook pages 1-5 (Sections 1-3 “The Country”, “The Language”, and “The Writing”).  2) Write new characters, one row each.

Objectives: Students will be able to apply the terms they have learned in their final project. 

Procedure:

1.                  Class work: finish your art project.  Due tomorrow.  No late work.

Procedure for HS 1P (10/8/08)

Objectives: 1) Students will be able to master the skills in telling time through various activities.   2) Students will be able to make grammatical sentences.
Procedure:
1. 1) Turn in your homework.  2) Get a copy of square paper.  3) Skit tomorrow.  Memorize it, please.  If you work with me, please give me your draft before you leave, please.  5) Lesson 1 Quiz next Monday/Tuesday (?).   
2. Dictation on dry erase board (後, 星, 期, 號, 釣, 魚, 昨). 
3. Calendar time (start from today’s date/weekday and replace with other terms of day).
4. Continue sentence patterns #2.  Class activity (when were you born?). 
5. Model new characters (對, 錯, 知, 道, 可, 以, 為).

H/W: 1) It’s your responsibility to read textbook pages 5-8 thoroughly.  2) Write new vocabulary as homework tonight, one row each.

Objective: 1) Students will be able to say/write math expressions accurately.  2) Studnets will be able to discriminate consonants. 
Procedure:
1. 1) Turn in your homework.  2) Quiz Friday (consonants, 4 sentences, 6 characters).
2. Dictation on dry erase board (+, =, 8-10, 100, consonants).
3. Continue last group of consonants (zh ch sh r z c s).  
4. Teach new term (-) and model stroke order.

H/W: 1) Practice blending.  2) Write new characters, one row each.

Procedures for MS 3P/5P

Objective: Students will be able to say/write math expressions in Chinese. 

Procedures:

1.  Return all paper work. 

2.  Review terms from yesterday (+, -,  ×÷, =).

3.  Class activity (flash cards).  Pair practice.

4.  Q/A session: be sure to ask Ms. any terms you need for your project.

Procedure for HS 1P (10/7/08)

Objectives: 1) Students will be able to tell/write the date/weekday by linking/consolidating old and new vocabulary.  2) Students will be able to ask/answer the questions regarding date/weekday.       
Procedure:
1. 1) Turn in your homework.  2) Take one square paper.  3) Draw a number for presentation order.  4) Correction: 6 points for memorization of your skit.  40 points in total and convert to 20 points in grade book.
2. Dictation on dry erase board (today, yesterday, tomorrow, week, etc.).
3. Match weekdays.  Review two terms (星期, 禮拜).  Explain examples of the usage of characters (幾). 
4. Go over sentence patterns (handout from yesterday).  
5. Model stroke orders of new characters.
H/W: 1) Practice/Memorize your skit.  2) Write new characters, one row each.

Procedure for HS 2P/9P (10/7/08)

Objectives: 1) Students will be able to write numbers (8-10, and 100) and operators (+, =) in Chinese characters.  2) Students will be able to discriminate initial consonants.   
Procedure:
1. 1) Turn in your homework.  2) Take one copy of square paper. 
2. Try on dry erase board (consonants ‘zh’, ‘ch’ and characters 一 to 七).
3. Teach final consonants (ch sh).  Pair practice/checking.
4. Model new characters. 

H/W: 1) Practice blending.  2) Write Chinese characters 8-10, 100, +, = as homework assignment tonight, one row each.

 

Procedure for MS 3P/5P (10/7)

Objective: Students will be able to articulate math expressions in Chinese.

1.  Teach new terms (+, -, x, /, =).

2.  Apply to math expressions.

3.  Quiz is off.  We will have art project instead, still due this Friday.  No late work.  Go over requirments as a class.

4.  Answer students’ inquiry about terms they need for their project.

Procedure for HS 1P

1. 1) Take one handout (“Supplementary materials for Level II Lesson 1”) and one square paper.  2) Sign up your name/your pair in the Skit Sheet.  Tomorrow we will draw the number for your presentation number. 
2. Monday sharing.
3. Review (matching game-today, tomorrow, yesterday, the day before/after yesterday/tomorrow, two days before/after yesterday/tomorrow). 
4. Dictation on dry erase board (characters 1-10, month, day, birthday). 
5. Recite months from January to December. 
6. Class activity (My birthday is ….  How about you?)
7. Model stroke orders for new characters .

H/W: 1) Practice/memorize your skit (due Wednesday).  2) Write new vocabulary as homework assignment tonight, one row each.

 

Procedure for HS 2P/9P
1. 1) Take one handout (“Supplementary material for Level I Lesson 3”) and one square paper (for homework tonight).  2) Quiz this Friday (4 sentences about yourself-hard copy, new terms learned this week, and blending).

Procedure:

1.  Quiz (Lesson 11).

2.  Return Level 1 book.  Receive your new Level 2 book.

3.  View CD “Master Artists and their works”.  See and touch some brush pens and paintings Ms. Chang brings in today.

Procedure for HS 2P/9P (10/3/08)

1.  Quiz (Counting numbers 0-100). 

2.  Game (Family members)–9P only.  Receive your new Level I textbook and workbook.

3.  View CD “Master artists and their works”.  See and touch some brush pens and paintings Ms. Chang brings in today.

Procedure for MS 3Pp/5P

1.  Return all oral presentation papers.

2.  Review all terms from yesterday (year, month, day, hour, o’clock, minutes, second, everyday, today)

3.  Examples/Applications (specific examples of time/date were given, students wrote down the presentation.)

Procedure for HS 10 (10/2/08)

 

Objective: Prepare students with a solid knowledge for quiz tomorrow. 

Procedure:

  1. 1) Turn in your homework.  2) Return your Ni Hao textbook. Tomorrow after the quiz. 
  2. Work on workbook.  Check your answers.
  3. Go over quiz sample questions.
  4. Go over skit cards.  Pick your skit card tomorrow.
  5. 1) Get your new Ni Hao level II Workbook.  2) Same requirements in the rubric, but you need to memorize the dialogue this time.  Turn in hard copy, rubric, and skit card.  Due next Wednesday.  Pair with your classmate or individual work with Ms. Chang.

 H/W: Review for quiz tomorrow.

 

Procedure for HS 20/90 (10/2/08)

 

Objectives: 1) Students will be able to say/tell/count numbers from 0 to 100 before Friday.  2) Students will be able to name all family members and identify the relationships with them in Chinese.  3) Students will be able to sight read Hanyu Pinyin.  4) Students will be able to pronounce/discriminate all consonants.

Procedure:

1.      1) Take one handout (zh, ch, sh, r, z, c, s).  2) Quiz (Counting numbers) due tomorrow (20 points).  3) Mr. Rings will come in to observe before 10/15. 

  1. 1) Read your sentences about yourself (random drawing).  Train you listening skill.  – 4 points count toward your quiz grades next Friday.  2) Game (Family members—20 only).  Train your high level thinking skills
  2. Continue Review Sheet #1.
  3. Teach new consonants (zh, ch, sh, r, z, c, s).
  4. Pair practice.

4.   Teach new terms (year, month, day, o’clock, minute, second, hour, today, everyday).
