Tapping out sounds helps us read and spell words.

Parents, your child already knows how to do this. Here’s the procedure:

1. Hold up the opposite hand with which you write. This will be your tapping hand.

2. Look at your word. Say the first sound of the word while you tap your thumb to your index finger.

3. Say the next sound of the word while you tap your thumb with your middle finger.

4. Say the final sound of the word while you tap your thumb with your ring finger.

5. Say the whole word as you tap your thumb with all 3 fingers.

*For words with more than 3 sounds, use your little finger, or break it up!
