Questions about classroom procedures come up at various times during the year. These times provide a good opportunity to clear up any misconceptions about what is expected in class.
While many of the questions and answers below address most class concerns there may be a question you have that is not covered here. What time does school start at Central?
School starts at 8:30am daily.
Where does my child's jacket and bag go?
Each student is provided a locker into which his/her jacket, bag, boots, and other things fit into.
What will my child do when he/she first comes into the classroom?
Every morning students are given "Morning Work". "Morning Work" includes reinforceing previous learned skills in subject areas, spelling or vocabulary aquisition, and other practice deemed necessary.
Is "Morning Work" due for a grade?
At times during the year "Morning Work" is due for a grade. This will be noted in your child's assignment notebook in a particular subject. Most, or all, of the handout should be completed as students have 20 minutes to begin working on it in the morning. Not all morning work is due for a grade.
When is homework due?
Homework is usually due the next day. There might be an extended assignment during the year. If so, it will be noted in your child's assignment notebook when it is due. Students may also write the due date at the topic of the assignment.
How much homework will a student have every evening?
Students have 45 minutes to an hour of homework every evening. Ample class time is given to start assignments during a particular subject along with a learning lab for at least 15 minutes at the end of most days to ask questions and get more of their work done. Learning lab is silent time for all students to be able to concentrate on their work and needs to be used to get work done.
Will a student be allowed to turn in homework early?
No, because parents need to see the work their child is doing in class.
How will parents know what a student has for homework every evening?
The easiest way is to look at the student's assignment notebook and compare what is written to the work in their folders. Homework is posted every night on the homework webpage.
When does a student turn in his/her homework?
Homework is collected during the subject in which it is due. A member of each group collects the assignment for all students of a group and turns it into the appropriate assignment tray where I collect it to grade it.
Will homework ever be collected in the morning before school starts?
No. Please refer to the previous question and answer.
Will a student be reminded they have not turned in an assignment?
Yes. A student will be reminded in at least 2 of 3 ways: (1)Verbal reminder, (2)Assignment listed on the board with his/her name, and (3)Through the Weekly Work Record.
What is a Weekly Work Record?
A Weekly Work Record is a sheet of paper that will list all missing assignments for a student during a week. If a week has a sticker then no homework was missed that week. If an assignment appears in a subject area, then that assignment is due on Monday of following week by 3:05pm. If the assignment is still not turned in, it receives no credit.
How will I get the Weekly Work Record?
Each Friday your child will bring a Friday Folder that contains all work completed and graded for a week. In that folder will be the Weekly Work Record for a student. The completed work is yours to keep but the Weekly Work Record must be signed and returned the following Monday. I check to make sure I have each student's Friday Folder using a checklist. If the folder is not returned a consequence is given typically staying in for a recess.
How important is the Weekly Work Record and Friday Folder?
The Weekly Work Record is like a contract between myself and each parent. I make sure all assignments are up to date and if any are missing, I note them on the Work Record. I ask you to read the Work Record and if assignments are missing, help your child to locate it or them and turn in for credit the following Monday. By signing the Work Record you acknowledge all assignments have been turned in or missing.
I need to report a student's absence?
Call the office at 440.740.4100 to report the absence. Please do not call or email me with the absence notification.
If a student is absent, how many days do they have to make up the assignments?
Each student has as many days as them missed to make up the homework. For example, if a student misses three days of school starting on Tuesday, then that student has Friday, Monday, and next Tuesday to complete the assignments and turn in on Wednesday.
How much does lunch cost?
Lunch costs $2.25. If a student forgets lunch they can borrow money and is to be paid back to the cafeteria the day after.
