general tips
- Preview the test before answering any question as it gets you thinking about the test material. Allow more time for written response questions.
- Read the directions carefully and follow all directions. Many points are lost because directions are not followed.
- Know if the score is marked down for incorrect responses.
- Anwer easy questions first. This gives you confidence and momentum going through the test.
- Pace yourself and allow time for more difficult parts.
- Skip difficult questions, but make sure to go back and answer them.
- Go back over the test making sure you haven’t skipped any questions left unanswered and making sure you have all correct answers.
multiple choice
- Read the directions carefully to know whether you must mark one best correct answer or all correct answers.
- Read the whole question first before reading your options. Use what you know to eliminate answer options you know are wrong. Try to elimiate answers down to two to give you a 50/50 chance to guess the correct answer.
- If you really don’t know the answer, try to check for "look-alike" options to find what you consider the best among them.
- Don’t get stuck on any of the questions. If you don’t know the answer skip it and go on and come back to it later.
- Fill in the answers carefully.
true/false
- Make sure you have read the question correctly.
- These questions ask a contrast between 2 choices that can be great or small.
- Pay close attention to negative qualifier words like always, never, no, none, every, entirely, and only as they usually imply a false statement.
- On the other hand positive qualifier words like usually, rarely, sometimes, frequently, ordinarily, and usually imply a true statment.
- The entire statment must be true. If one part is false, the whole statment becomes false.
matching
- Very similar to answering multiple-choice questions.
- Try eliminate some answers.
written response or essay
- These kinds of questions ask you to put together information, make relationships, or draw conclusions. Pay attention to the action word you are asked like compare, summarize, differentiate, or contrast.
- Use some type of pre-writing strategy before you begin to organize your thoughts.
