A Modified Charlotte’s Web Unit

For the 2012 Global Read Aloud project, participants chose the chapter book Charlotte’s Web. I was disappointed at first.  How are we ever going to participate in this project with such a high level book with so few pictures?  Okay, I thought, I think we can do this.  After all, we’ve read Freckle Juice in the past, and at least half of Beezus and Ramona. And last year, we participated with Flat Stanley. So, I decided, if I put in the extra time to make visuals, we can do this.   Our students are mostly visual learners, so I knew…

Week Four Planning- GRA 2012- Charlotte’s Web

This will be our fourth week with Charlotte’s Web and I am pleasantly surprised at how well we are doing. In the fourth week, I am hoping we will work on chapters 14-possibly 18 so that we will only need to extend the Global Read Aloud project for one extra week and end on Nov. 1st. On Monday, we’ll read chapter 14 after we review the main characters, setting, problem, potential solution, and recent events in the story.  We’ll cut and glue pictures into our Comprehension Notebooks.  We’ll add a picture of Dr. Dorian to our characters section.  You can…

Weeks 2 and 3 in Review- GRA 2012- Charlotte’s Web

In the last 2 weeks, we’ve managed to get through chapters 4 through 13 in Charlotte’s Way and get in a lot of cool writing along the way.  I’ve had my doubts about continuing with this book and it’s tough vocabulary, BUT I have confidence in my students and know we’ll make it through two more weeks through the end of this book. Although I may skip paragraphs in chapters when we read aloud, and I may change some vocabulary so that our students understand, I really believe they are getting it! We are now reading a chapter, cutting and…

More Ideas for the GRA 2012- Charlotte’s Web

In this post, I’d like to keep a running tab of ideas (things I’ve found or been given, not all original ideas!) so I don’t forget them as we move forward: – Pig Craft/ Writing Activity (change animal to simple pig) – http://pinterest.com/pin/197665871116479680/ – After watching the Feature Film (not animated version), use this News 2 You- ChWebNews2You – Discuss friendships, writing activity- chwebgoodfriend – Put questions about the book on Post-Its or strips of paper. Place in a basket or bag. During circle time, have each student pull a question and have an aide read it aloud. Ask the…

Week Three Planning- GRA 2012- Charlotte’s Web

With only four days last week, we struggled to get through 5 chapters and understand all of the complex vocabulary that Charlotte’s Web presents. The words “salutations” and “objectionable” in the same paragraph? That’s tough for us. Nonetheless, we’re doing our best to get through the book and understand the main ideas in this story because we truly believe in this project.  Who wouldn’t want to participate in the Global Read Aloud project? So… I’m fairly certain of these things: 1. We know this story is about a pig named Wilbur. 2. We know there is a girl named Fern…

Week Two Planning- GRA 2012- Charlotte’s Web

Although the Global Read Aloud wiki suggests we get through chapters 7-11 this week, we are going to working on chapters 5-9.  We also have only a four day week due to NEOEA (North East Ohio Education Association) Day. So, here are the plans… Monday- On Monday, we’ll start by reviewing the characters in the story on the Characters page in our Comprehension Notebooks. We’ll discuss what has happened so far in the story using the visuals we’ve glued into our Notebooks as well. Next, we’ll read chapter 5 aloud while students cut out the visuals for chapter 5. They…

Week One Review- GRA 2012- Charlotte’s Web

This week, we jumped into Charlotte’s Web with both feet for the 2012 Global Read Aloud! We read chapters 1-4 slowly but surely using visuals and cutting and gluing pictures into our Comprehension Notebooks. We didn’t make it through the suggested 6 chapters, but we did get to watch about 20 minutes of the animated movie so that we have some background knowledge once we start reading again next week. On Monday, we made a really cute pig craft that we found on Pinterest when we talked about Wilbur as the main character. You can find it here- http://pinterest.com/pin/77405687315660795/ On…

Week One Planning- GRA 2012- Charlotte’s Web

We’ll start the Global Read Aloud this week and I am really excited!  Of course, this makes a LOT of teacher work, but I am on my way to being prepared for a great project! The Comprehension Notebooks are ready. The GRA folders are ready. Each student will bring one home each night. PLEASE RETURN IT EACH DAY! Every student in Room 5 will get a chapter book to take home every night too. Student A will also get a copy of the book in Spanish. Monday‘s Lesson begins during afternoon circle time where we introduce the book, show some similar…

Week 4 of the Global Read Aloud Project

This week we finished up chapter 5 in Flat Stanley and took assessments to see if we understood the story.  There were a lot of great scores on these assessments and I was impressed with the kids’ comprehension of this chapter book!  What a great book to start the year with! Although the Global Read Aloud project was supposed to last just 4 weeks, we will c0ntinue for at least one more week while we receive back the Flat Stanleys we mailed out.  We will also start to talk about our Flat Stanley bag and what Stan has been doing…
