Goodyear Engineering Career Day

Goodyear Engineering Career Day

On Saturday April 20th eight students and I attended the 13th annual Goodyear Engineering Career Day.   We met at Firestone High School in Akron and spent the day working on several  engineering activities and meeting with many different types of professional engineers.  The students loved the activities, especially the egg drop, and meeting so many new students and professionals passionate about physical science.  Rashil represented BBHMS (randomly selected by rock, paper, scissors) in the final trivia game.  He was on fire answering question after question, a job well done for sure!!!  We also ran into BBHHS senior, Cecilia, who was awarded a prestigious engineering scholarship from Goodyear.  What an inspiring day :)

Rube Goldberg Event 2013

Rube Goldberg Event 2013

This year’s students were challenged to create a Rube Goldberg device that could fly a paper airplane in 20-25  steps.   Students did a fantastic job and it was wonderful to see all the amazing ideas they came up with.   The furthest airplane traveled 42 ft!!!

Microscopic Investigation

Microscopic Investigation

Students traveled outside on the second day of school to collect samples of everyday objects.  These samples were brought back into class and viewed under a digital microscope.  Students were amazed by what they saw and how different even a leaf looks magnified 10x, 60x, or 200x times.  Students will learn how to use a light microscope next before we start our unit learning all about cells.

More Science fun to come all year long…

Splat Lab

Splat Lab

During intervention on the second day of school HSF students explored the meaning of independent, dependent, and controlled variables.   Students dropped colored water from various heights and recorded their width and shape upon impact.  The height each water droplet fell was

changed during the lab.  Students were looking to see if a pattern between splat size (the dependent variable) and drop height (the independent variable) exists.  This was a fun first lab to start off a great year ahead.
