Discussion of Special Course Expectations

AP Government an AP European History are challenging college level courses that seeks to provide students with the opportunity to earn college credit while attending high school.   Upon completion of each course of study, students are able to sit for the AP test.  Depending on the score, students may earn college credit or bypass pre-requisite seminars.  Students are expected to independently study course materials outside of class and to participate in classroom activities to reinforce their knowledge of the content area.  Students are often caught off guard by the amount of reading required for this course.  It's important for students to keep on schedule.  In addition, students will also be required to write essays which demonstrate competent use of the English language and its standard grammatical forms.

Disciplinary Guidelines:

First Occurrence:  Verbal warning by teacher to student for minor infractions.
Second Occurrence:  Teacher detention issued at teacher’s convenience or office detention.  Communication home.
Third Occurrence:  Office detention with detailed referral.

Issues of bullying and harassment will be immediately addressed involving the students, parents and administration.

Required Materials:

Writing Materials:  Pen (blue or black), pencil (#2 lead), highlighter (any color) and notebook paper.

Three-ring Binder: Each binder should include notebook paper, dividers for organization and some type of folder to hold loose or irregularly sized papers. Students may use a 3-prong folder and carry one unit at a time.  These are inexpensive and lightweight!

Textbook:  We are using new textbooks and students are expected to immediately cover the book.  Please note that students are not permitted to make any marks in the books – even in pencil. Textbooks do not need to be brought to class except by special request which will be made well in advance

Homework Policy

Homework is to be individual (original) work and not completed as a team or group.  Plagiarism or cheating is not permitted, even on homework!

Homework is considered “on-time” when submitted at the start of the class period in the wooden bin on the front bookcase.

Homework submitted late may earn partial credit based on the quality of the work.

Work may not be submitted after the completion of the unit.

Absence Policies

As per the school policies outlined in the student handbook:

§         Tardy:  Students are expected to be in their seats when the bell rings.  Quizzes begin immediately at the start of the period.  Students who are late or absent from class are not permitted to make-up the missed quizzes but may apply extra credit points to the missed work.  This is due to the problems with maintaining the integrity of quiz questions and the difficulty of managing make-up work for 6 full classes of students (upwards of 180 students).

§         Planned Absence:  Students are to make arrangements for makeup work and/or tests missed upon return to school.  No more than one day’s make-up shall be permitted for each day of absence.  The teacher will not be expected to tutor individual students.  All work and/or tests are to be made up in the prescribed period of time.  If the planned absence begins within one day of a scheduled test, the test must be taken before the absence begins.

§         Unplanned Excused Absence:  Students are encouraged to keep caught up in classes by checking with other students for missed assignments or consulting teacher web pages for updates.  Generally, students will be allowed one make-up day for each day absent, but exceptions may be made with the approval of the teacher.  If a student will be absent for a prolonged period of time, assignments may be obtained by calling the office at 740-4715.  A day’s notice is necessary in order to give the office time to collect the assignments.  Please note that if a student is present the day before a test and absent on the test day, the test must be taken immediately upon return to school.  No extra days are provided.

Extra Credit Work

§         Periodically, students will be given the opportunity to submit extra credit work.  These points may represent no more than 5% of the student’s overall grade.
