Working together with Hilton students and parent volunteers art projects were auctioned at Family Bingo Night, on Feb. 16th.  Thanks to all the artists that contributed their skills and time to create the beautiful pieces that were auctioned to give back to Hilton School. Every student at Hilton contributed to the projects and I am so proud of their hard work and so glad that they were able to experience and learn that artists can and do often use their talents and skills to uplift and give back to their community!  Way to go Hilton artists!

3rd graders voted on a theme, then painted tiles that will be used to frame mirrors and a chalkboard.  2nd graders have reclaimed furniture and decorated each with painted images.  Each 1st grade student created a square for a class quilt.  Kindergarten students gave their thumbprints for class ceramics bowls…..

Kindergarten art students are making a storm of  snow fun.  First, we folded paper and cut out shapes on the sides-it was amazing when we unfolded the paper-the shapes repeated 4 times to make symmetrical patterns that  look like snowflakes.  We decorated the white paper with white oil pastels, then painted the snowflakes with shivering COOL colors and guess what?  The white decorations magically appeared!  Ask any all day Kindergartener what the 3 cool colors are!

Working in groups, we built a snowman…we cooperated to glue our snow balls together, then mixed the cool colors with white paint and discovered that the colors got lighter!  Using bubble wrap we printed with our light cool colors all over the snowmen…our hands got so messy we even put some handprints on. 

Next week when the paint was dry we worked together to create details for our snow friends.

3rd grade artists have been exploring clay coil building.  We looked at many examples of coil vessels made by various artists,  

and then spent one class learning to roll coils, build the sides by stacking coils, and slip/score so the pieces stick together.

Students explored the line quality of coils and possible ways to use those coily lines to make decorations.  We cleaned up early for time to sketch an idea for our assignment for next week: create a coil vessel with a clay coil line decoration. We worked from our sketch to build our vessels.

The Japanese Bridge, Claude Monet

2nd Graders studied Monet’s paintings and discovered that Monet loved to paint water and was intrigued with the ever changing reflections in the water.  Click on Monet’s bridge to hear see another of Monet’s waterlily paintings at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.  When you get to the museum, scroll down on the right until you find the Monet, then hit the play button to hear Monet’s gardener, its way cool!  Look at our reflections. We created a landscape with a horizon line, mixed colors to make a moody autumn sky,  and used our sketching practice to apply what we noticed about branches to paint trees.  We borrowed Monet’s dabbing painting style to make glorious fall leaves, the whole time folding and printing our painting to make a reflections in the water.
