Curriculum and Homework for October 29th-November 2nd

In Reading Language Arts there is no story or spelling words due to the short week. We will be doing Thanksgiving activities and writings all week. We will be writing about how Thanksgiving feels, tastes, smells, sounds and looks. Also, we will write about what we are thankful for and why our nation celebrates Thanksgiving. On Tuesday, Mrs. Rickert will be coming in for about 45 minutes to do an activity in preparation for the Halloween Party on Wednesday. 

In Math  we will be concentrating on solid figures in geometry and measuring along with polygons and perimeter.  As always, please make sure your child is studying his/her math facts on a daily basis. We will be reviewing addition and subtraction and starting multiplication and division in November. 

In Science we will continue our rocks and minerals unit. We will continue our PowerPoint projects on birthstones. Last, we will be testing the hardness of our minerals by scratching them with pennies and nails. There is no science Wednesday due to the Halloween party and parade.  

Miscellaneous- No School on Monday due to an in-service day for teachers. Wednesday, October 31st is our Halloween party from 2:15-3:00. Kids bring their costumes to school and then change into them around 1:50-2:10. Then the whole school will have the parade at 3:00. When the parade is over, parents may take their child home for the afternoon. Mrs. Foulkes and Mrs. Rickert have all of the information regarding the party. Report cards come home on Friday, November 2ndPLEASE SIGN THE REPORT CARD ENVELOPE AND RETURN IT ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 5TH. YOU KEEP THE REPORT CARD.

Thursday, November 1st -     Math- page 238 and Science page 37 Review.Friday, November 2nd – Report Card Envelopes need signed and returned.

Curriculum and Homework for October 22nd-26th

In Reading Language Arts We will be reading a story called Balto, the Dog Who Saved Nome on pages 184-199. The skills we will be concentrating on are reading guided comprehension, vocabulary, spelling words with sh, ch, and tch, word relationships, author’s purpose, making predictions, common and proper nouns, and writing a paragraph of information. On Thursday we will be taking our End of Selection Test. This is a vocabulary test along with reading comprehension from the story.  

In Math  we will be completing unit 2 by taking a test on Tuesday the 23rd. We will complete a review guide in class on Monday and the students will use that to study for their test. Also, please look over the review sheet sent home with the SRB for the test.  On Wednesday, we will start unit 3 and measurement and concentrate on sections 3.1 -The Class Shoe unit of length and 3.2- measuring with a ruler. As always, please make sure your child is studying his/her math facts on a daily basis. We will be reviewing addition and subtraction and starting multiplication and division in November.

 In Science we will continue our rocks and minerals unit. We will continue our PowerPoint projects on birthstones. Last, we will be doing streak, luster and light tests on 12 different minerals.    

Miscellaneous- Conference letters coming home on Monday. Please sign and return them on Tuesday. Sally Foster Fundraiser Pick up on Wednesday. Classroom store will be on Friday the 26th from 2:45-3:30. The grading period closes on Friday, October 26th and report cards will come home on Friday, November 2nd.  Just an early FYI- Halloween parties this year will be on Wednesday, October 31st from 2:15-3:00. Then the whole school will have the parade at 3:00. When the parade is over, parents may take their child home for the afternoon. Tuesday, October 23rd  Spelling – page 30. Math- math boxes 2.10. Reading- (you have two days for this) take home reading books and read Balto on pages 184-199 for Thursday’s comprehension test.  

Wednesday, October 24th    Math- 3.1 MB. Science- 6 vocabulary word sheet. Library books due tomorrow. Reading-  study vocabulary words for tomorrow’s vocabulary test and make sure reading book comes back by tomorrow for end of selection test.   

Thursday, October 25th-  Spelling- study for test tomorrow. Math- page 237

 Friday, October 26th – Grading period ends today.

Curriculum and Homework for October 15th-19th

In Reading Language Arts we will be reading a story called Turtle Bay on pages 158-177. The skills we will be concentrating on are reading guided comprehension, vocabulary, spelling words with kn, wr, gh, and ph, authors purpose, compound sentences, classifying and categorizing and writing directions. On Thursday we will be taking our End of Selection Test. This is a vocabulary test along with reading comprehension from the story.  IMPORTANT NOTE: Please sign and return the test booklets that came home today(Monday, Oct. 15th). We will go over these during conferences.

In Math we will be concentrating on sections 2.6- comparison of number stories, 2.7- the partial-sums algorithm, 2.8 the trade-first subtraction algorithm and 2.9- addition with three or more addends.  The unit 2 Math test will be on Tuesday, October 23rd. We will begin reviewing for the test this Friday and the kids will bring home a review sheet on Monday the 22nd.  Please make sure your child is studying his/her math facts on a daily basis. We will be reviewing addition and subtraction and starting multiplication and division in November. 

In Science we will continue our rocks and minerals unit. We will begin our PowerPoint projects on birthstones. We will also start to learn how to take notes in our rock and mineral note taking packet. Students will learn the process of looking up at the projector screen and write notes onto their papers. We will be constructing a rocks and minerals information packet to use as a resource and study guide.  Last, we will be doing streak and light tests on 12 different minerals.   

Miscellaneous- There is a bus safety demonstration on Monday the 15th in the cafeteria from 9:45-10:15. Picture retake day is Wednesday the 17th for kids who were absent or want their picture retaken.  Fall Festival is Friday night from 5:00-9:00. Wednesday, October 17th  Math- page 229, Science- Scrambled Rock Sentences and Library books due tomorrow.

Reading-  study vocabulary words for tomorrow’s vocabulary test and make sure reading book comes back by tomorrow for end of selection test.   

Thursday, October 18th-   Spelling- study for test tomorrow. Math- page 230-231

Curriculum and Homework for October 8th-12th

In Reading Language Arts  there will be no spelling test, vocabulary test or end of selection test this week due to the theme test. We will be theme testing over the past 6 weeks of skills. These skills are decoding long words, using a dictionary, narrative elements, sentences, statements and questions, commands and exclamations, subjects and predicates, compound subjects and predicates, and writing a personal narrative. We will take a practice test on Monday afternoon and then grade it.  The test will come home on Monday night and the students can refer to this as a study guide for Tuesday’s Theme test. The Wednesday and Thursday Holistic test will be over reading comprehension and writing skills. In Math we will concentrating on subtraction by using our old math series as a supplement to Everyday Mathematics.  The homework’s will be titled USE WHAT YOU KNOW.  Please help assist your child in this if they need help. Most of my students are getting the concept, but they need to really know their basic math facts. As always, please make sure your child is studying his/her math facts on a daily basis. We will be reviewing addition and subtraction and starting multiplication and division in November. 

In Science we will continue our unit on rocks and minerals and concentrate on the 3 types of rocks which are Metamorphic, Sedimentary and Igneous.  Students will be encouraged to bring in any types of rocks that may have or find. Miscellaneous- Scholastic book orders due by this Thursday the 11th if ordering. No School on Friday, October 12th. Wednesday, October 10th _ - Math- 4.8 Use What You Know W.S. Science – study for vocabulary quiz tomorrow.  Library books due tomorrow.  

Thursday, October 11th   -   Science- Show parents Rocks and Minerals Birthstone Project and return by Monday the 15th!!!

Curriculum and Homework for October 1st-5th

In Reading Language Arts we will not be reading a story of the week this week due to the Ohio Reading Achievement Test on Tuesday. We will still cover all of the following skills: Vocabulary, spelling words with consonant blends st and str, using a dictionary, compound subjects and predicates, elements of nonfiction and review the writing process of a personal narrative. Also, we will be doing a lot of fun Halloween activities.  We will not have a vocabulary or end of selection test on Thursday. We will still have our spelling test on Friday this week. Please make sure your child gets plenty of sleep Monday night and eats a very good breakfast on Tuesday. We will be taking the test Tuesday afternoon from 12:30-3:00 so the students will have full bellies from lunch. 

In Math we will begin unit 2 and concentrate on sections 2.1-fact families, 2.2- extensions of addition and subtraction facts, 2.3- what’s my rule and  2.4- parts and total number stories.  As always, please make sure your child is studying his/her math facts on a daily basis. We will be reviewing addition and subtraction and starting multiplication and division in November. 

In Science we will start our new unit on rocks and minerals. We will be making model rocks and discussing the properties of 12 different rocks. We will be looking at their size, shape, color, layers and other characteristics. Students will be encouraged to bring in any types of rocks that may have or find. They can visit our class protopage at http://www.protopage.com/3rdgrade#GeneralPage/HealthScienceSocialStudies to view effective websites regarding rocks and minerals.  Also, we will finish up our Brecksville/Broadview Heights Books from our Social Studies unit.  

 Miscellaneous- Thank you to all of the volunteers last week for store and Halloween cutting- It is much appreciated. Tuesday the 2nd is our Reading Achievement test from 12:30-3:00. Please make sure your child gets plenty of sleep Monday night and eats a good breakfast Tuesday morning. Sally Foster fundraiser ends on Friday the 5th. Next Friday, October 12th there is no school. This is a NEOEA day for teachers.
