Curriculum For May 26th- May 30th

In Reading Language Arts we will be reading a story called Cocoa Ice on pages 224-255. The skills we will be concentrating on are reading guided comprehension, vocabulary, spelling words with –ed and –ing endings, comparing and contrasting, paraphrasing, references and resources, past-tense verbs and editing a research report. The research report will be completed this week and the PowerPoints will be burned onto cds with the other projects from this year. The end of selection test will be this Friday due to the Memorial Day holiday. Our spelling test will be on Friday. BOOK REPORTS FOR MAY ARE DUE BY MONDAY, June 2nd !!! 

In Math- we are concentrating on cross multiplication and division for the remaining of the year. Also, on Friday we will take the 100 facts multiplication tests.  The students have 10 to 15 minutes to complete this test with 90% – 100 % accuracy. Please use the sheets I sent home prior to Spring Break for practice.

  

In Science and Social Studies – we will complete our projects on the 4 habitats which are the desert, the forest, a sea shore, and a city lot.  We will continue to also discuss economics and learn about the city of

Cleveland. Thanks to the parents who attended the field trip to
Cleveland last week. It was a very successful trip and the kids loved it.    2008- Field trip to Cleveland Click on Picture to see full size.Miscellaneous- Store is this Friday the 30th from 2:45-3:30. End of the year party is next Wednesday the 4th. Lunch will be provided. More details to come. Last day of school is next Thursday the 5th. Wednesday, May 28th -Reading- (you have two days for this) take home reading books and read Cocoa Ice on pages 224-255 for Friday’s comprehension test.  Math- page 223.

Thursday, May 29th  Spelling- study for tomorrow’s test. Math-  9.7 and 9.8 Take Another look and study 0-9 facts for tomorrow’s timed test. Vocabulary- study for tomorrow’s test 

Friday, May 30th    – End of selection test today. Work on Book reports due by June 2nd.

Curriculum For May 19th- May 23rd

In Reading Language Arts we will be reading a story called Boom Town on pages 196-215 . The skills we will be concentrating on are reading guided comprehension, vocabulary, spelling words with VCV syllable Patterns, fact and opinion, main idea and details, references and resources, present tense verbs and writing a draft for a research report.  The research report is based on a president and we are then turning the information into a PowerPoint presentation. On Friday we will be taking our End of Selection Test due to the Cleveland Field Trip on Thursday. This is a vocabulary test along with reading comprehension from the story. The vocabulary words are listed on the spelling sheet and the students should study those throughout the week. Our spelling test will be on Friday. In Math- we are concentrating on sections 9.3- explorations: exploring arrays, areas and fractions and 9.4- a multiplication algorithm, Also, on Friday we will take the 100 facts multiplication tests.  The students have 10 to 15 minutes to complete this test with 90% – 100 % accuracy. Please use the sheets I sent home prior to Spring Break for practice.   

In Science and Social Studies – we are starting a new unit on habitats and how animals adapt. We are concentrating on 4 habitats which are the desert, the forest, a sea shore, and a city lot. The students will be making 4 squares on paper and they will decorate each square with what the habitat would look like.  We will continue to learn about the city of Cleveland and prepare for our field trip to Progressive Field and Lolly the Trolly this Thursday the 22nd

  Miscellaneous- Read-A-Thon Day is Wednesday the 21st. Kids need to have books. Snacks and sleeping bags are permitted along with school appropriate pajamas. Cleveland Field trip is Thursday the 22nd. Chaperones that will go on the trip with us are Monica Shaheen, Dave Dolansky, Tamara Augustine, Sandy Gembus, Ed Greenlee and Bill Craig. Please be here at school by 9:15 ready to go.  The parents that will meet us up there for half the trip are Dave Speck, Andrew Kaminski, Phil Bryan, and  Nanci Grattino. We will see you at 10:10 at the box office at Progressive field.

Wednesday, May 20th Reading- study vocabulary words for Friday’s vocabulary test and make sure reading book comes back by Friday for end of selection test. Library books due tomorrow. Pack lunch for tomorrow’s filed trip. Dress Appropriately please.  

Thursday, May 21stSpelling- study for tomorrow’s test. Math-  study 0-9 facts for tomorrow’s timed test. 

Friday, May 23rd   – Work on Book reports due by June 2nd.

In Reading Language Arts we will be reading a story called Yippee-Yay on pages 170-187. The skills we will be concentrating on are reading guided comprehension, vocabulary, spelling words with VCCV syllable Patterns (vowel consonant consonant vowel), main idea and details of a paragraph, references and resources, fact and opinion, main and helping verbs and writing a research report. The research report is based on a president and we are then turning the information into a PowerPoint presentation. On Thursday we will be taking our End of Selection Test. This is a vocabulary test along with reading comprehension from the story. The vocabulary words are listed on the spelling sheet and the students should study those throughout the week. Our spelling test will be on Friday. BOOK REPORTS FOR MAY ARE DUE BY MONDAY, June 2nd !!! 

In Math we will wrap up our unit on Probability and test over it tomorrow (Tuesday the 13th). Also, on Friday we will take the 100 facts multiplication tests.  The students have 10 to 15 minutes to complete this test with 90% – 100 % accuracy. Please use the sheets I sent home prior to Spring Break for practice.  We will then start large multiplication and division on Wednesday.  

In Science and Social Studies we will wrap up our unit on Citizenship and test over it on Thursday. The students will bring home a review book they have been working on for the last 2 weeks. They will use this to study for the test.  We will also learn about the city of Cleveland and prepare for our field trip to Progressive Field and Lolly the Trolly. Reminder, next Thursday the 22nd is our Cleveland Field trip.  

Miscellaneous- Central School Field trip tomorrow (Tuesday, May 13th) Please have your child wear his/her Red Highland Drive Signature shirt. On Wednesday Mr. Augustine is coming in to discuss our Health curriculum and the importance of they eye. Cleveland Field trip is next Thursday the 22nd. Chaperones will be contacted after the lottery drawing this morning (Monday).

Curriculum For May 5th- May 9th

In Reading Language Arts we will be reading a story called Leah’ Pony on pages 148-163 The skills we will be concentrating on are reading guided comprehension, vocabulary, spelling words with compound words, fact and opinion, narrative elements of a story, action verbs and learning how to write a research report. On Thursday we will be taking our End of Selection Test. This is a vocabulary test along with reading comprehension from the story. The vocabulary words are listed on the spelling sheet and the students should study those throughout the week. Our spelling test will be on Friday. BOOK REPORTS FOR MAY ARE DUE BY MONDAY, June 2nd !!! 

In Math we will be concentrating on 11.4- spinner experiments, 11.5- designing spinners, 11.6- blocks-in-a-bag experiment and 11.7- using data to predict outcomes. Also, on Friday we will take the 100 facts multiplication tests.  The students have 10 to 15 minutes to complete this test with 90% – 100 % accuracy. Please use the sheets I sent home prior to Spring Break for practice.  

 In Science and Social Studies we will be concentrating on citizenship and chapter 7 in our social studies book. We will also learn about the city of Cleveland and prepare for our field trip to Progressive Field and Lolly the Trolly. A permission slip letter is coming home soon.  

Miscellaneous- 3rd Grade Picture this Friday. Please have your child wear his/her Red Highland Drive Signature shirt. Every year Mrs. O’mara has a professional picture taken of the 3rd grade and then provides the students with a banner gift at the end of the year.   Next Tuesday, May 13th is our field trip to Central
