Reading/Language Arts
There are no spelling words or story this week. Starting next month, students will write book reports on their own. These book reports will be due the first of the month. In class, we will read our first book titled KoKo’s Kitten. We will learn the proper format to writing a book report and then write a formal report. A letter about this and the format will come home the beginning of January and the first report will be due February 6th.
Students may do their reports on any chapter book at third grade level. Click here to view the letter that will come home on January 5th.
Math
We finished chapter 5 and will take a review guide on Monday. Students will bring this home on Monday to study with for their test on Tuesday. The rest of the week moves us on to Geometry! On Friday we will test over the factor 9 for our banana splits.
Science
Our unit on soil will be wrapped up this week and our class will take a test on Wednesday. A review guide was sent home last Thursday to use. When we return from the break, we will move on to social studies.
Extras

**Holiday party on Thursday from 11:45-1:30 or when it ends. All are welcome!
**Holiday sing-a-long in the gymnasium on Friday at 2:30. All are welcome!

Reading/Language Arts
This week, we will continue our third theme in reading: Friends to Grow With. In this unit, students will be observing how people grow and change through their relationships with others. By reading about ways in which friends and family influence real people and fictional characters, students will recognize how people influence each other.
This week we will by reading The Talent Show on pages 306-321. In this realistic fiction story, Beany is anxious about the upcoming talent show. Aftera talk with her father, Beany realizes the most important thing is tohave fun.
As we read the story, students will be: learning new vocabulary,prefixes and suffixes, sequencing, and drawing conclusions.Abbreviations will be the subject of our grammar lessons thisweek.
This week our spelling pattern will be: words with the /o/ sound.Please spend a few nights with them going over their words learning theproper spelling and usage.
Our end of selection test and vocabulary test will be on Thursday and our spelling test will be on Friday. Students will bring their books home on Tuesday night to reread the story. You can access the spelling words by going to the left side of this page and click on the category spelling lists. Remember, students can also listen to the story at home by clicking on the category- reading stories read aloud on the left side of our web page.
Math
Students will work on understanding tenths and hundredths and how to exchange between the two of them. This is a difficult concept and we will spend time working on different strategies to grasp and comprehend it. Later on this week, we will practice decimal place value to thousandths.
Science
Our class will be able to identify how conservation of materials saves resources by recycling, reducing, and reusing. We will work on our soil kits and demonstrate soil particle layering. Students will add soil samples in tubs, shake them, and view the next day how it separates into the different layers. We finish the week with a review guide followed by a test next week.
Miscellaneous
Tuesday-PSO brunch
Wednesday- $3.00 pizza money due for the holiday party next Thursday the 18th from 12:00-2:15.
Scholoastic Book orders handed out on Monday the 8th are due by this Wednesday so they can be mailed in time for next week. If you want to surprise your child, just send your order in with an envelope labeled Mr. Wasil.

Thursday, December 11th – Spelling- study for test tomorrow. Math-Math boxes 5.4 and study 8′s. Science- start studying for test next Wednesday. Use the study guide completed in class today along with your flash cards.
Friday, December 12th – Review all multiplication facts up to 8 this weekend.

Reading/Language Arts This week, we begin our third theme in reading: Friends to Grow With. In this unit, students will be observing how people grow and change through their relationships with others. By reading about ways in which friends and family influence real people and fictional characters, students will recognize how people influence each other. Our story this week is titled The Stories Julian Tells on pages 284-299. In this realistic fiction story, Julian meets Gloria, a new girl in his neighborhood. Together they make a “wish kite” with wishes attached to its tail; both wish for lasting friendship. As we read the story, students will be: learning new vocabulary, sequencing, and reviewing multiple meaning words. Plural possessives will be the topic of our grammar lessons this week. For writing we will be writing a persuasive letter to Lois Sacher convincing him to write another Wayside School Book. Our spelling pattern will be possessives and plurals. Some examples are brother’s and brothers. Our end of selection test and vocabulary test will be on Thursday and our spelling test will be on Friday. Students will bring their books home on Tuesday night to reread the story. You can access the spelling words by going to the left side of this page and click on the category spelling lists. Math This week students will be able to develop a sense of very large numbers; and to compute with large numbers. On Tuesday we will miss math due to our music rehearsal at the middle school. The remainder of the week we will count base-10 blocks, identify polygons, and compare perimeters and areas. Thursday and Friday finds us working with decimals. We will work on tenths and hundredths this week.
Science Students will observe how pollution affects plants and identify how land is used and identify different types of pollution. We will do an experiment titled, “Who Dirtied the Water.” Ask your child to share with you this experiment and what they learned from it. Our class will also be able to identify how conservation of materials saves resources by recycling, reducing and reusing. The remainder of the week we will work with our soil kits identifying how soil is layered by doing experiments with soil and soil tubes.
Extras- Monday-Music practice 9:40-10:40
Tuesday-Music rehearsal at the middle school 9:30-11:15.
Wednesday-Music concert at Highland 2:00 PM and at the middle school 7:00. **All students are asked to be there by 6:45. Look for me to be outside the room. We are usually in the music room or the band room.
