The grammar skill for the week is adjectives for What Kind. Students will also be able to pick a writing prompt and write about it.
Our end of selection test and vocabulary test will be on Thursday and our spelling test will be on Friday. Students will bring their books home on Tuesday night to reread the story. Remember, students can also listen to the story at home by clicking on the category- reading stories read aloud on the left side of our web page.
Math
Chapter 8 has two primary objectives: To review the uses of fractions and fraction notation and to help children develop a solid understanding of equivalent fractions. The approach to equivalent fractions in third grade is informal and includes many hands-on activities.
This week students will use fractions to name a of b equal parts. The class will be guided as they make predictions based on outcomes and construct situations that meet given conditions using a blocks-in-a-bag experiment. Students will be provided opportunities to explore fractional relationships, spatial relationships, and combinations. We will also use number lines as a model for fractions.
Science
Students will be able to demonstrate the concept of pulling a vehicle with unbalanced forces. The class will also be able to add blocks to their vehicle to investigate the effect of a load motion. After that, they will measure the time it takes for a loaded vehicle to move a given distance, add force to move the vehicle, and investigate friction with a load. Last students will compare hot wheel/matchbox cars: strength, direction, mass, weight, movement, force, and friction.

Reading/Language Arts
There are no spelling words or story this week due to the holiday and Read-A-Thon Day on Friday. We will be reading the story titled -Be a Perfect Person in Just Three Days. This story is a very funny story by Stephen Manes. Milo, the main character of the book, winds up doing some pretty strange things to become perfect while following the directions in a “how-to” book on how to be perfect in just three days. Following the instructions, he finds himself doing some pretty odd things, like wearing broccoli around his neck. The end of the story is appropriately funny and sweet. We will also see the video on this and do a compare/contrast diagram based on this.
In addition to reading this book, students will write a paragraph using adjectives to replace the word good.
Math
In math we will take our OLSAT (Otis Lennon School Ability Test) on Tuesday. We will review for our test on chapter 7 on Wednesday and take a test on chapter 7 Thursday.
