Curriculum and Homework April 27th- May 1st

Reading/Language Arts

This week we will take our OAT test in reading and mathematics. The reading test will be Monday and the math test will be Wednesday. The Ohio Reading and Mathematics Achievement Tests are annual assessments that measure how well students have learned the reading and math concepts taught. The achievement tests are designed specifically for Ohio students and are based on Ohio’s academic content standards. They do not test a child’s intelligence or aptitude and are not meant to compare children’s abilities.
The federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001(NCLB) requires all states to establish academic standards that tell what students should know and be able to do in reading and math at the end of each grade. NCLB also requires states to test all students in grades 3- 8 annually in reading and math to assess how well students are meeting the academic content standards. The results of the tests are used to identify districts, schools and students that may require additional resources to meet state academic standards.

We will also continue to read Charlotte’s Web and doing various activities based on the book. When Fern convinces her father not to kill the runt pig of the litter, she names him Wilbur and raises him with a bottle. Soon Wilbur goes to live in her Uncle Homer Zuckerman’s barn down the road, where she visits him every day. But when she’s not there, Wilbur is lonely — the sheep, cows, geese, even the rats, don’t want to play and be his friend.  Then he meets Charlotte, a grey spider whose web is in a corner of the barn door, and they become good friends. But soon after, they learn that Wilbur is to be slaughtered next Christmas to make hams and bacon. So Charlotte hatches a plan to make the Zuckerman’s want to keep Wilbur around forever.

Reading/Language Arts/Math

This week we will focus on the Ohio Reading and Mathematics Test review.

The results of the tests are used to identify districts, schools and students that may require additional resources to meet state academic standards.

We will also start to read Charlotte’s Web.

Science

This week we begin chapter 4 Animals from Long Ago. On Monday, students will be able to demonstrate and identify characteristics of fossils by making one of their own! We will also identify how living things of the past compare with those of today and what extinction is. The class will identify fossils in sand. They will find cookies and carefully take the chocolate chips out with toothpicks to get an idea of how fossils are taken care of. The end of the week has us reviewing this chapter as it is a short one. We will take a small quiz or open book test on this next week.
