Our story this week is If You Made a Million on pages 264-291 by David M. Schwartz. This is a lighthearted look at counting, earning, spending and saving money. Marvelosissimo the Mathematical Magician, with the help of his fantasy animal friends, introduces money in units from one cent up to a million dollars. Marvelisissimo shows how people earn money by providing goods (such as purple painted pots) and services (such as dusting a duck or mowing a meadow). He also explains how to earn money by saving money and letting it earn interest. Along the way, the program shows how to count money, how to use checks instead of money, and how to spend money, by paying cash or borrowing from a bank. The program also compares relative amounts by measuring and weighing money. (A million dollars in pennies would make a stack 95 miles high.) Marvelosissimo’s magic is a marvelous introduction, not just to money, but to our economic system.
In connection with this story, we will work on: main idea and details, elements of nonfiction, word chains, learning new vocabulary, using context to confirm meanings, and comprehension. Irregular verbs will be the focus of our grammar lessons this week. Our spelling words this week are words that end in –tion or-sion.
Math
We will focus on probability and long division this week. Students will learn how to do long division and relate it to a family make up. They will follow these steps: 1. DAD says to divide first 2. MOM says to multiply next 3. SISTER says to subtract 4. BROTHER says to bring down 5. ROVER says to repeat or remainder. Click here to view the Power Point for this demonstration.
Science and Social Studies
We will be finishing our Animals unit and testing on it Monday, June 1st. We will also wrap up our Cleveland unit and start a new unit on Economics.

This week, we will be continuing Theme 5: GoodNeighbors. In this theme, students discover that people in communities rely on one another for
goods and services as well as support. They take a closer look at the interactions that make communities survive and thrive.

· To organize, graph, and interpret data
· To represent the likelihood of outcomes with visual models
· To predict outcomes and estimate the make-up of a population using survey data and objects.

Reading/Language Arts/Social Studies
No Spelling words or story this week due to field trips and Read-A-Thon Day. Students will have integrated lessons with these three subjects this week. We will start off the week by reading What’s So Big About Cleveland? By Sara Holbrook. Ten-year-old Amanda has been everywhere and done everything. Or so she thinks. Her parents have taken her to all the cities of the world: London, Paris, Marrakech, Hong Kong . . . you name it. So when Amanda comes to Cleveland on a family visit, her reaction is probably no surprise: B-o-o-o-ring. “What’s so big about Cleveland, Ohio?” she sneers to her host, ten-year-old Alan (whose mom is best friends with Amanda’s mom). What indeed. Nothing Alan can show her is as big, or as famous, or as fast, or as fun as something else she’s done somewhere else. Until, that is, Amanda discovers that there is something rather special about Cleveland, Ohio—something she didn’t expect at all. This is the first illustrated children’s storybook about Cleveland. It will be a delightful introduction to the city for kids of all ages and a warm reminder for Clevelanders who sometimes forget just what makes this a special place to live!
The class will also be putting together an information book based on Cleveland and its landmarks. Along with this unit, students will apply basic rights of citizens, understand purpose of Bill of Rights, and explain the voting process. This is in chapter 7 based on Citizenship.
Math
Chapter ten focuses on measurement and data. In this unit, children review and extend their previous work with measures of length, weight, and capacity. Measurements will be displayed in graphs and frequency tables. The emphasis on hands-on activities in this unit reflects the fact that anything that involves measures begins with the use of measuring tools.
Children will also extend previous informal work with the median and mode of a set of data and introduce the standard method of calculating the mean. These statistical measures are used to analyze and compare measurement data. Unit 10 has three main areas of focus:
· To review units, tools, and measures of weight, length, and capacity
· To introduce the mean of a set of data
· To gain experience with plotting points on a coordinate grid.
