We learned about the importance of Loam in class and we did an experiment to see what would happen if we planted grass seed in Loam and also in Clay. Check out the pictures below. I guess the Loam wins…

Reading/Language Arts
There will be no spelling words this week or story. We will continue to work on summarizing skills. Students will read passages and write a summary about what they read. They will be given tools to help them break the paragraph apart into a web. From there, they will take that information and put it into a summary.
We will finish our book How to Eat Fried Worms this week and make our own recipe on how to make a fried worm. It should be interesting to see what the students come up with! Also, we will watch the movie and do a comparison Venn Diagram on it with the book.
Last, we will be writing a paragraph about our favorite school activity for the month of December. We have been doing this each month and will have a nice binder on display for Open House in February.
Math
Our class will finish up on decimals this week and have a test on Thursday. Look for a pretest to come home on Tuesday so that plenty of time will be given to review each night before Thursday.
Science
The soil unit will also end this week with a test on Wednesday. On Monday, a review guide that we completed in class will come home along with vocabulary flash cards that the students have been using in class. Wednesday morning we will have a speaker come in to talk about the types of soil.

Reading/Language Arts
No Spelling words or story this week due to theme testing. This week the student students will take a language arts assessment test. It will consist of word relationships, author’s purpose, compound sentences, common and proper nouns, singular and plural nouns, and singular possessive nouns. We will take a pretest on this Monday and it will come home with your child to study with. On Tuesday we will have the language arts assessment test. Students will also identify current events and demonstrate summarizing skills by completing the November Common Assessment.
We have been reading How To Eat Fried Worms by Thomas Rockwell. Billy Forrester’s always up for a dare, but this time he’s in for a real challenge. His friends, Alan and Joe, bet Billy fifty dollars that he can’t eat 15 worms in 15 days. Billy survives the first one, chokes down the second, and practically relishes the third. When Joe and Alan realize that Billy’s going to stick to his goal — and even enjoy doing it — they try everything they can to keep Billy from reaching his goal. Billy, with the help of his family and his friend Tom, tries to stay one step ahead of their tricks. They even create new recipes — from Southern Fried Worm to Whizbang Worm Delight — to help Billy reach his goal!
Also this week we will do an author study on Jan Brett. With over thirty four million books in print, Jan Brett is one of the nation’s foremost author illustrators of children’s books. The class will get an opportunity to choose some of her books to read and do various activities with them. Some of the books she has written are The Wild Christmas Reindeer, The Mitten, Hedgie’s Surprise, The Hat, and much more!
Math
In math this week, we will practice decimals up to the thousandths place! Even though this is a very challenging chapter, the children are really doing a nice job grasping this concept. Please continue to encourage your child to study their multiplication facts as we continue to test on these Fridays. On Friday, we will have our classroom store.
Science
Students will be able to identify how conservation of materials saves resources by recycling, reducing and reusing. We will begin examining the different types of soil in our lab. We will also see how soil looks in layers by creating our own soil tube. Many of these lessons take two days to complete.
Store
Our last store was a huge success! The students were able to use their decision making techniques and math skills to purchase items that they have worked hard to earn. This is a wonderful program that helps your child work hard in and out of the classroom to become a better student and citizen. If you are able to contribute to our store it would be greatly appreciated. This would be a great opportunity to do some spring cleaning and send it our way! This will make our store interesting and filled with new/used items. Thank you for your help!
